Fall 2009 Newsletter

Bryan McIntoshWelcome to Indu-Kote System's quarterly newsletter. Each quarter, we feature an industrial or commercial coating project completed by IKS. This quarter, we present a preparation and coating project for a Washington, DC, landmark.

- Bryan McIntosh, President

The Bold and the Beautiful

Project: Sculpture entitled "East of the River" (Located near Congress Heights Subway Station, on the Green Line, in Washington, DC)
Client: Anne Allardyce (Artist) and All-Weld Co. Ltd.(Fabricator)
Type of work: Preparation and coating of stainless steel sculpture

PROBLEM

  • Stainless steel substrate - Difficult surface to attain coating adhesion.

  • Exterior exposure - Ultraviolet degradation, acid rain, and large temperature fluctuations can cause many coatings to chalk, fade or otherwise degrade.

  • Public work of art - Coating system needs to be tough, durable, resistant to graffiti, able to maintain original colour and gloss levels, and have an exceptional level of finish quality

ANALYSIS

In consultation with Tnemec Industrial Coatings, we quickly discerned that this striking work of art required a coating system that would match the timeless nature of the art.

RECOMMENDATION

The following specification was developed:

  • SSPC-SP6 commercial blast clean using silica or garnet abrasive to achieve a surface profile of 1.0 to 1.5 mils

  • Apply 1 coat of Series 66, Hi-Build Epoxoline Polyamide Epoxy primer. Coating applied with Indu-Kote Systems’ Air-Assisted, Airless, Electrostatic spray system.

  • Apply 2 coats of Series 1070, Fluoronar, advanced thermoset solution fluoropolymer urethane in a custom yellow colour. Coating applied with Indu-Kote Systems’ Air-Assisted, Airless, Electrostatic spray system.

  • Apply 2 coats of Series 1070, Fluoronar, advanced thermoset solution fluoropolymer urethane in a clear finish. Coating applied with Indu-Kote Systems’ BINKS Conventional Air spray system.

FAQ

  • Why blast clean? - Abrasive blasting provides a thorough, uniform anchor pattern to the stainless steel making conditions ideal for tenacious mechanical bond of the hi-build epoxy primer. It also is very effective at removing contaminants from the substrate.

  • Why use a fluoropolymer urethane coating? - Tnemec Industrial Coatings’ fluoropolymer urethane provides unsurpassed performance. No other resin system holds colour and gloss - particularly with bold colours - as a fluoropolymer urethane.

  • Why use a clear coat? - Added protection for gloss and colour retention and graffiti resistance.

RESULTS

A coating system with unequalled aesthetic performance.

  • Chalking, Fading & Weather Resistant - Resins, pigments and additives determine how well a coating resists these items. Although more costly, initially, Fluoropolymer resins and high quality pigments and additives provide the greatest value over time.

  • Graffiti Resistant - The nature of a fluoropolymer urethane film is very hard and dense making it chemical and graffiti resistant.

  • 15 Year Warranty - This project was only a 3 gallon sale for the supplier. Tnemec provided a 15 year written warranty, underwriting the performance of the system. Simply put, we are very confident in the performance of this system.
