Indu-Kote Systems offers advanced carbon absorbing paint as part of our commercial service offering in Toronto and the GTA. This innovative eco-friendly coating actively captures and sequesters CO₂ from the air during curing, turning painted surfaces into carbon sinks while protecting them.
Commercial buildings face rising CO₂ emissions and poor indoor air quality from vehicle exhaust in parking garages, machinery in warehouses, and daily operations.
We can install a CO₂ absorbing paint in your commercial facility that delivers a durable finish that purifies air, reduces your facility’s carbon footprint, and outperforms traditional paints. Ideal for LEED-certified projects, net-zero buildings, and sustainability-focused commercial spaces in Toronto, it supports environmental regulations and creates healthier environments for employees and tenants.
The magic happens through a natural process called carbonation. This is the same reaction that turns lime back into limestone over time.
We apply the coating (a high-purity lime-based formula) to prepared surfaces
As the paint cures the calcium hydroxide in the limestone base reacts with CO₂ in the air: Ca(OH)₂ + CO₂ → CaCO₃ + H₂O This transforms the soft paint into a hard, mineral limestone layer while permanently capturing carbon dioxide.
The reaction is most intense during the first 28 days of curing but continues at a marginal rate for years because the coating remains breathable.
As shown in the image, this process actively pulls CO₂ from the environment, purifying the air around it!
Parking garages: Vehicle exhaust creates high CO₂ concentrations in enclosed areas. Our carbon absorbing coatings help neutralize buildup, improve air quality, and reduce ventilation demands.
Warehouses and factories: Large open spaces with machinery or forklift traffic benefit from ongoing air purification and mold-resistant properties.
Offices, hospitals, and schools: Creates healthier indoor environments with zero added VOCs.
Exterior concrete, brick, and masonry: Provides long-lasting protection while contributing to your building’s overall carbon sequestration.
At Indu-Kote Systems, we are Toronto Industrial & Commercial Painters that have been proudly serving Southern Ontario for 40+ years.
How long does the carbon absorbing effect last? The majority of CO₂ absorption happens during the first 28 days of curing. After that, the reaction slows but continues gradually for years as long as the surface remains breathable and exposed to air. Once fully carbonated, the coating becomes stabilized and no longer “absorbs” at the same rate but remains permanently sequestered.
How much carbon can one coating absorb? Real-world performance varies by product, coverage and thickness, but high-quality limestone-based coatings can sequester the equivalent of a mature tree’s annual CO₂ absorption (roughly 10–14 kg) with just a few 15-litre buckets. Some formulations achieve around 129 grams of CO₂ per square metre applied. For a typical commercial project, this adds up to meaningful carbon reductions, often offsetting the emissions from the paint’s own production plus extra.
What kind of finishes are available? We offer a classic matte, velvety mineral finish that gives a sophisticated, breathable look. A wide palette of natural-pigment colours is available (whites, soft earth tones, and custom tints). The finish is naturally anti-bacterial and does not yellow or chalk like many synthetic paints.
Is this paint suitable for interior and exterior use? Yes it performs exceptionally on both. Its high breathability prevents trapped moisture, making it perfect for Toronto’s freeze-thaw cycles on exteriors and for condensation-prone indoor areas like garages or basements.
How does it compare to traditional commercial paints? Unlike acrylic or latex paints that form a plastic film, these coatings are mineral-based, zero-VOC, and actually improves air quality. It also qualifies for green building credits while traditional paints often work against them.
Is it safe for occupied buildings? Absolutely. It contains no VOCs, no microplastics, and no harmful chemicals. The high pH naturally inhibits mold and bacteria, and spaces can often be re-occupied quickly after application.
What surfaces can it be applied to? It bonds best to mineral substrates like concrete, plaster, brick, block, and stone. We can also apply it over properly prepared existing paint or drywall with the right primer system.
Do you provide this service in the Greater Toronto Area? Yes, Indu-Kote Systems has been serving commercial and industrial clients across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, and the entire GTA for years. We handle everything from site assessment to professional application.
